Dear Futuro Verde parents and faculty,
We share staffing updates for the 24-25 academic year as of May 1, 2024.
This year was a great year in terms of labor retention, something that had been a significant challenge for Futuro Verde for many years. We lost only one teacher during the academic year, a significant improvement over previous ones. As of this week we have 3 out of 28 teachers departing Futuro Verde.
Our 9 support and administration staff will continue with us. So out of 37 employees 3 are moving onwards – a very high retention rate for a school setting.
It’s important we all acknowledge that continuing to improve our teacher salaries to more competitive levels, remains an overriding challenge, and providing housing support for our teachers, given the high price of housing in our area. Due to the zero increase in tuition and fees, we were only able to improve teacher salaries by 1% (average teacher salary increases are in the 5-8% range this year in Costa Rica). We must work to improve teacher salaries and thus it’s necessary to improve our revenues streams, to guarantee we can retain and hire in a highly competitive teacher labor market and given the special characteristics necessary for IB teachers.
We are saddened to share that Katie Chiaverini is moving on to be the Student Principal at European School in Heredia. Katie has played many roles in her 7 year career at Futuro Verde, helping us build our IB Diploma program, teaching English as a second language, CAS and Extended Essay, and serving as coach and curriculum developer. As one of our most experienced and effective teachers, her loss is significant and will be difficult to replace. We wish her wonderful professional challenges as a school leader, and for her family life in a new urban setting! You will be missed!
Likewise, our awesome Physical and Outdoor Education teacher Juan Diano, has accepted a position at Gaia School. Juan has been one of the amazing PE duo with Denisse for the last 4 years, so his move will be felt. We wish him the best in his new school and job.
Finally, Kelly Lopez, our wonderful Upper Primary ELA and Global studies teacher, will be taking some time off the professional circuit, as she adapts to significant life changes. We wish her the best in this transition and thank her for her contributions to Futuro Verde, over the last 2 years.
We are in the process of securing strong replacements for the above positions already, thanks to our pre-hiring work over the last 3-4 months. We will be making final offers this coming week, and once final decisions have been made will share publicly our new set of teachers and their background.
While it is always sad to lose good teachers, this is also a normal part of the school cycle, and this year’s retention is record high, and is a highly positive indicator of Futuro Verde, the changes we have been implementing, and our future.

Compartimos actualizaciones de personal para el año académico 24-25 a partir del 1 de mayo de 2024.
Este año fue un gran año en términos de retención laboral, algo que había sido un desafío importante para Futuro Verde durante muchos años. Sólo perdimos un profesor durante el año académico, una mejora significativa con respecto a los anteriores. A partir de esta semana tenemos 3 de 28 docentes partiendo de Futuro Verde.Nuestro personal de 9 soporte y administración continuará con nosotros. Así, de 37 empleados, 3 están avanzando: una tasa de retención muy alta para un entorno escolar.
Es importante que todos reconozcamos que seguir mejorando los salarios de nuestros maestros a niveles más competitivos sigue siendo un desafío primordial, al igual brindar apoyo de vivienda a nuestros maestros, dado el alto precio de la vivienda en nuestra área. Debido al cero aumento en matrículas y tarifas, solo pudimos mejorar los salarios de los docentes en un 1% (en comparación, los aumentos salariales promedio de los docentes están en el rango del 5-8% este año en Costa Rica). Debemos trabajar para mejorar los salarios de los docentes y, por lo tanto, es necesario mejorar nuestras fuentes de ingresos, para garantizar que podamos retener y contratar en un mercado laboral docente altamente competitivo y dadas las características especiales necesarias para los docentes del IB.
Nos entristece compartir que Katie Chiaverini pasará a ser directora estudiantil de la Escuela Europea en Heredia. Katie ha desempeñado muchos roles en su carrera de 7 años en Futuro Verde, ayudándonos a desarrollar nuestro programa de Diploma IB, enseñando inglés como segundo idioma, CAS y ensayo extendido, y sirviendo como entrenadora y desarrolladora del plan de estudios. Como una de nuestras maestras más experimentadas y efectivas, su pérdida es significativa y será difícil de reemplazar. ¡Le deseamos maravillosos desafíos y oportunidades profesionales como líder escolar y para su vida familiar en un nuevo entorno urbano! ¡Te extrañaremos!
Asimismo, nuestro excelente profesor de Educación Física y al Aire Libre, Juan Diano, ha aceptado un puesto en Gaia School. Juan ha sido uno del increíble dúo de educación física con Denisse durante los últimos 4 años, por lo que su movimiento se sentirá. Le deseamos lo mejor en su nueva escuela y trabajo.
Finalmente, Kelly López, nuestra maravillosa maestra de ELA y estudios globales de Upper Primary, se tomará un tiempo fuera del circuito profesional, mientras se adapta a cambios significativos en su vida. Le deseamos lo mejor en esta transición y le agradecemos sus contribuciones a Futuro Verde durante los últimos 2 años.
Ya estamos en el proceso de asegurar reemplazos sólidos para los puestos anteriores, gracias a nuestro trabajo de precontratación durante los últimos 3 o 4 meses. Haremos ofertas finales la próxima semana y, una vez que se hayan tomado las decisiones finales, compartiremos públicamente nuestro nuevo grupo de maestros y sus antecedentes.
Si bien siempre es triste perder buenos maestros, esto también es una parte normal del ciclo escolar, y la retención de este año es récord y es un indicador muy positivo de Futuro Verde, los cambios que hemos estado implementando y nuestro futuro.
