FAQs

What is Futuro Verde International School?

Futuro Verde is a PreK-12th grade International Baccalaureate school established in 2008, nestled in the jungle on the southern tip of the Nicoyan peninsula.

It’s a place where multilingual classrooms, cultural and socioeconomic diversity, and a deep respect for both academics and the natural world come together in one remarkable learning environment.

We currently have 220 students enrolled, 52 of whom are able to attend because of our scholarship program.

What is the Futuro Verde Scholarship Program?

Our scholarship program provides varying levels of partial tuition support to students who could not otherwise attend our school.

Scholarships are awarded based on financial need and are designed to ensure that a family’s economic circumstances never become a barrier to a top-tier education.

Currently our scholarship program supports students across all grade levels and requires approximately $250,000/year to maintain.

The scholarship program is funded entirely through private donations.

Every contribution matters and even small donations can be just as life-changing for a family stretching to make it work.

Why Give

We believe that the best schools aren’t defined only by what happens inside the classroom.

They’re defined by the values of the community around them—the families, alumni, friends, and supporters of Futuro Verde in both Costa Rica and the world beyond.

While student tuition fees go toward paying teacher and staff salaries, classroom maintenance, and the many operating costs of the school, scholarships are funded exclusively through private donations.

Many of you have seen firsthand what this school makes possible for all types of students and the diversity that makes this school so special.

To us, diversity does not just mean children who look different and come from different countries. It includes children from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds as well.

This is why we’re asking our local and global community for scholarship funding support.

Scholarship recipients benefit directly from the access to excellent education, yes, but every student at Futuro Verde benefits from the diversity on our campus.

And the positive impact ripples outward into the Southern Nicoya peninsula communities that we serve.

How It Works

Donations to the Futuro Verde Scholarship Fund are processed through Amigos de Costa Rica, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the US.

We also accept direct contributions via bank transfer for donors based in Costa Rica.

All contributions go entirely toward student scholarship support.

Who receives these scholarships?

Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled at Futuro Verde who demonstrate financial need and apply before the yearly deadline.

Both new and returning students are considered while continuing students receive priority. Our goal is to ensure continuity so that once a student joins our community, they will be able to stay for the duration of their education. But the more scholarship funds we receive, the more scholarships we can grant.

Who decides who receives the scholarships?

A scholarship committee made up of two board members, two administrators, and a social worker reviews scholarship applications and decides which applications are approved and how much they receive. At the moment, all scholarships are partial.

How is scholarship funding determined?

Applications are considered on a needs-based basis during a once-per-year application period. Final decisions made by the Scholarship Committee in consultation with the Finance Department according to the income matrix.

Does 100% of my donation go to scholarships?

Yes, every dollar or colon donated through this campaign is designated exclusively for student scholarships. Futuro’s Verde’s operating costs are funded through other donations and student tuition.

If you would like to consider funding Futuro Verde beyond scholarship support, please reach out to development@futuro-verde.org.

Is my donation tax deductible?

For  US taxpayers, yes. Donations made through Amigos de Costa Rica are fully tax-deductible under US law, as Amigos de Costa Rica is a registered 501(c)(3) organization.

Donors outside the US should consult their local tax advisor regarding deductibility.

Can I give in installments or set up a recurring donation?

Yes, when you donate via Amigos de Costa Rica, you can select recurring monthly donations.

Can I designate my gift to a specific student or grade level?

Absolutely! Please let us know via the notes section if you donate via Amigos de Costa Rica or directly via email at development@futuro-verde.org.

What if I want to give but can't donate money right now?

We understand and we’re grateful for your support in any form!

Sharing this page with your network is one of the most powerful things you can do. The more people who see this campaign, the more scholarships we can fund together.

In addition, we always welcome volunteer efforts to support our staff and students. If you’re interested in volunteering your time and expertise with Futuro Verde please reach out to eventos@futuro-verde.org.

How will I know my donation made a difference?

A better future starts with you.
