Online and Distance Learning

Futuro Verde has chosen to follow a blended learning model. We, like most schools, started this quarantine with what is referred to as an asynchronous model, we then added in synchronous lessons as the technology skills of our staff, students and parents improved, and now we run what is referred to as a Blended Learning model for all students and families.

Synchronous

Blended Learning Model

Asynchronous

Students learn together at the same time.

Communication happens in real time.

Possibility for learning to be more engaging and effective.

Allows for instant feedback and clarification.

Students have some classwork daily that is asynchronous.

Students have some classes daily that are *offered synchronously.

Students learn at different times.

Communication is not live.

Possibility for learning to be more convenient and flexible.

Allows students to work at their own pace.

*Not all families can make online learning and synchronous learning work for their family. Futuro Verde teachers and staff have always accommodated the different needs of each family within our broader blended model.

Starting the week of August 3rd, we have also integrated recreational opportunities on campus as a part of our recreational center permits from the local government and the health department.

Important clarifications regarding our attendance protocol for online learning:

  • Attendance will be taken for every Zoom synchronous lesson, including Peace Practice.
    • Your grades may be impacted if you do not attend Zoom classes.
    • During ALL zoom sessions, you will be expected to::
      • Have your camera turned on
      • Be seated and appropriately dressed
      • Participate verbally and in Zoom class interactive activities
      • Ensure full attention to the lesson (no distractions from: pets, other people in the room, peripheral noise, phone, etc.)
  • Students are expected to check-in on Hangouts or Seesaw, depending on the grade level, each morning at 9am. Teachers will be completing attendance based on that 9am check-in.
    • If a student does not check-in by 9, but does come online at some point in the day and is completing work and communicating with teachers, a note indicating that will be made in our internal system but no penalty will be applied.
    • If a student does not check-in at all during the day and completes no work, our support team will contact the family to problem-solve and support. If there is a justified reason for not connecting, no penalty will be applied.
    • If a student does not check-in, does not complete work and this is a continual and regular pattern of behavior and the student does not cooperate with support efforts, the absence will duly impact their grades.

Please note: Only actively enrolled students continue to receive access to our online, and in-person upon return, programming and the continuity of full year, grade level studies.

Our top priority as a school is what it has always been: to mitigate the negative impact on our students that a global crisis like the one we are facing can cause. We want our students to continue to learn and grow, to not face interruptions in their schooling and to continue to dream big for a positive and opportunity-filled future after this temporary crisis has passed. We know that online assessment processes are imperfect in design and implementation, even more so in the situation we are in, and given that fact we will proceed with the following assessment protocol:

  • Teachers will continue to assess student work and give assessments like quizzes and projects through our virtual learning platforms and use assessment rubrics to gauge the level of student mastery of grade level content.
  • We are completing a separate online assessment grading scale for our teachers, which will take into consideration a range of mastery and allow teachers to provide more generous consideration of students’ grades for classwork and assessment. This modification should ensure that student grades are reflective and empathetic to the time we are living and do NOT negatively impact student progress and achievement.

In order to calculate 100%, the division of 100 will be done in the following manner during online learning:

Remember:

Student and family well-being is the most important part of online learning.
Parents, take care of yourselves so you can best take care of your kids!
