The role of sport in society and in the future of the next generations is often much more relevant than we sometimes think. Sport is not only related to health, it also means companionship, respect, discipline, sacrifice, cooperation, competitiveness, teamwork, coexistence, equality, justice, empathy, creativity, perseverance, humility, fun, self-discipline, and self-knowledge. These are values and virtues that are essential, not only in the areas of sports, but must be applied to our daily lives, in order to live in a society that is constantly developing, and in which peace can prevail.
With all these attributes, we can confirm that sports have a wonderful impact in changing people, and why not, in changing the world. Sport should never be a privilege only for some, sports are a right, to which everyone, from a young age, should have access, and we should be encouraged to do so. If we know how to take advantage of its benefits, sports will be a fundamental tool to strengthen bonds, objectives and solidarity.
During the International Sports Day Month for Development and Peace, which is celebrated on April 6 each year, we will encourage our children to participate in physical activities that improve our health, well-being, and quality of life as individuals and as a community. Sportsmanship and teamwork is a very powerful tool for learning to overcome difficulties and challenges, such as those we have had to experience in the past year as we have gone through the Covid-19 pandemic, which we are still fighting against.
On this special occasion, for those of us who are passionate about sport and healthy living, we take the chance to reflect and give the deserved recognition and value to sports and the role it plays in our lives, in the development of our children, and in the peace of our societies.

As usual at Futuro Verde, the 2019 school year was full of sports and recreational achievements. From circuit to national levels, our students proudly represented our colors and demonstrated that everyone’s effort and perseverance are the basis of athletic success.
Both in team sports, such as volleyball, and in individual sports, such as swimming, chess and cross country, our institution´s name has been very well represented by our athletes. Among the highlights are two of our students reaching cross country nationals, where they had an outstanding participation, and nine students qualifying for swimming nationals, where they won gold, silver and bronze medals. For the first time in our history, we also managed to classify a team to the national chess tournament, with our team achieving an honorable fifth place.
The competitive season of the Ministry of Public Education is over. However, this does not mean that opportunities for our students and families to get involved in sports activities have come to an end. We will be closing the school year with our annual trail run during which all our students run all parents and community members are invited to participate. Futuro Verde Trail Fun Run 2019 will be on December 13, save the date! Come and enjoy exercising your body in the company of the entire Futuro Verde community.
If you have any questions or would like to get involved in the Trail Fun Run 2019 race, do not hesitate to contact me at alejandro@futuro-verde.org

Why send your child to camp? The benefits for your child will last much beyond the camp itself. The Model United Nations Institute highlights the many camp benefits which increase social skills and improve overall mental and physical health. A few of the most prominent include: learning from positive role models, the development of self-reliance and independence, and making new friends with people from different backgrounds. The Century Foundation also reports that “students’ exposure to other students who are different from themselves and the novel ideas and challenges that such exposure brings leads to improved cognitive skills, including critical thinking and problem solving.”
Another important aspect of academic summer camps is the preparation they provide for college and career life. MUN Institute reiterates that college admissions are growing more and more competitive and this then continues into the job search. Camps help students gain new skills that universities and employers are looking for, including communication abilities, critical thinking skills and motivation to focus on specific subject areas (Walsh, 2018). In our Futuro Verde College Counseling course, we specifically work on identifying hard (quantifiable) and soft (personal) skills, developing and strengthening them throughout the high school years.
Many of our very own Futuro Verde students have had the opportunity to attend camps or will be doing so in the future. Two of our students have recently returned from a music camp in Southern United States. When asked about the highlights of their experience…the first thing both students mentioned was the opportunity to meet new people from different cultures. They also both recognized the challenge of staying with a home-stay family but how it was a positive experience that made them grow as individuals. For one student, she found it a bit of a struggle to speak English the entire time, but was appreciative of having to go out of her comfort zone to communicate with her host family and other camp members. She also loved the Master’s class as she improved her technical skills in music. Traveling all on their own and the preparation for travel was a new experience and help them plan ahead and be responsible for many small details, whether it is from deciding which clothes to bring to finding city attractions to visit.
Two students who regularly attend a wilderness camp in the Northwest of the United States commented that their favorite memories include kitchen food raids with their counselor late at night, learning how to play ga-ga ball, and meeting new people who they hang out with for an entire week thus getting to know them better. They remember the skills and new games they learn and even find themselves singing camp songs upon their return home.
Several other students have had the opportunity to attend a local camp in San Jose which was service oriented. One student excitedly remarked about her favorite memory which was volunteering at a local non-profit organization because it was a fun experience and she enjoyed getting to help others. Another student who went to the same camp appreciated learning leadership skills, working as a team, and the fun activities they got to do with diverse groups of people.
All of the students who participated in camps reflected on the fact that going off to camp on their own brings about a lot of nervousness and excitement but that it is an exhilarating feeling traveling on their own and increases their independence. A father of children who attend camp regularly agrees with the independence piece – he believes it is an important life skill, working through homesickness at a young age, dealing with the ups and downs of camp life and being resilient enough to enjoy the overall experience. In short, camp can be an enlightening experience for both students and parents, teaching life skills that can endure a lifetime.

Our competitive season is in full swing and there is no doubt that efforts in training are the key to success during competitions! Our athletes are training hard and making our institution proud! In Cross Country, 9 of our runners qualified for the regional event and in the regional event we had excellent results, managing to classify Leandro Salazar and Brittany Castrillo for the national final on May 13 and 14 in Nosara.
Our athletes are also dominating in mind games. On April 25, Chess Interregionals were held, attended by delegations from Nicoya, Lepanto, Cóbano and Santa Cruz. Among the most important results stand out the second place of Joaquín Ramírez, third place of Allison Elias Montoya and first place of our male category B team facing the host team of Lepanto in the final and defeating it in an exciting tiebreak game. Santiago Ramirez, Eco Jacob, Edgardo Salas and Jonathan Semyonov will represent our institution in the national final in Pérez Zeledón on May 27, 28 and 29.
In Swimming and Volleyball our athletes have not yet entered the competitive stage. However, they continue to work hard with a winner’s mentality week in week out because they know that medals are won in training and collected during race day.
Stay tuned for the final results of our competitive season, which, I assure you, look very promising!

For over a year now Futuro Verde students, staff, parents and our greater school community have worked together to raise the funds needed for a multi-use sports court for the school. With our efforts thus far we have raised over $5,000. The total cost of the court is estimated at $40,000, which would include the court base and roof. Our board president, Rico Reolon, has been working hard to secure an external donor willing to support the funding needed for our court and just this last month the good news came in- a Swiss donor has committed to $20,000 toward our sports facilities!
We held a surprise announcement with our staff and students and filmed the moment to share with our social media community and as a thank you to our donor. Students and staff celebrated in full- overjoyed to have achieved such impressive progress on this important goal for our school community! It is never lost on our school community that we have and continue to thrive thanks to the support of generous donations just like our current Swiss donors and we are tremendously grateful for this ongoing support.
Phase one of construction for the sports court will begin as soon as possible. This phase will complete the court base and will boast a purpose-built facility designed for:
