Student Life

olimpiadas de matemáticas

Futuro Verde has been characterized by promoting activities that develop not only students’ academic abilities, but also their skills as human beings in all areas of life, such as arts, mathematics, science, service learning, civics, community and global education, as well as opportunities to experience the cultural diversity that Futuro Verde cultivates within and outside the physical space of the school.

It is incredibly important for children and young people to take part of these activities. This participation becomes an important part of their development as human beings, as it allows students to take an active role in their own educational process. By responsibly assuming this role, they create habits that will stick with them throughout their lives. These activities also bring great benefits in different areas of students’ lives such as improved self-esteem, time management, interpersonal relationships, communication skills, sense of belonging and motivation for their studies.

The year 2020 brings with it even more opportunities for students to develop these skills. We invite all parents to encourage their children to be part of student life at Futuro Verde.

Change in Policy, Sharing of Graduation Exam Results

Change in Policy, Sharing of Graduation Exam Results

Looking in to the future of our IB students

Futuro Verde has long prided itself on our student success with graduation exams and we are proud, each year, of our students and their achievements academically. The academic results for any school are very important and we know how much our students’ success in elementary, middle and high school continue to pave the way for their university acceptance and university success. Prospective and current parents alike often consider our exam results to be a sign of the quality of teaching and learning at Futuro Verde. Like it or not, exam results continue to be an important factor in ongoing access to post-secondary opportunity and success.

For years, when we only had the MEP diploma to offer, we would anxiously await our exam results each year and we’re fortunate to proudly share the 100% success trend year after year. Now, with students working toward a new goal with our IB diploma option in conjunction with our MEP Costa Rican diploma and the option for IB certificates as well, we are reconsidering our approach to revealing the details of our students’ results. So, why the reticence to share more and make a bigger deal about student exam results moving forward? We will share with you three main points and some specific details that explain our new policy moving forward.

  1. Futuro Verde is a mission and vision driven school. Parents continually share with us how much they see and feel our mission and vision day in and day out as they visit and interact with our school and our students. Our mission and vision speak to the preparation of our students to be critical thinkers, to be fully bilingual and environmentally minded and to strive to promote a harmonious world on a local and global scale. Examination results, though important and often sought out as measures and determinants of success, prove wholly inadequate in measuring a child’s true ability in the foundational ways of thinking and of being that we seek to develop in our students.
  2. Our second main concern with over-emphasizing student exam results relates to a growing trend worldwide to be much more mindful of student well-being. An ever present pressure for perfectionism, irrationally high expectations and overly competitive environments for learning and youth development, as shown by current research, such as that summarized in the following two articles: BBC article on the rise in toxic perfectionism, article on role of parents and teachers regarding student well-being, are leading to a mental health crisis never before seen among our children and young adults. Over emphasis on the part of our school and our community on the exam results of our students leads to a deterioration of our students’ well-being.
  3. The third, yet primary, reason for our shift in approach to sharing student results speaks to the nuance Futuro Verde now lives of student exam success. Students at Futuro Verde can choose among any number of paths to success, with each bar of success being slightly different, yet nonetheless meaningful, than the other. As only a sample of the many opportunities for success that our diploma students can choose from are: full IB Bilingual diploma and MEP diploma, only IB Bilingual Diploma, only MEP diploma, MEP diploma with IB course certificates, etc. With such a myriad of options, quantifying our student success with only one percentage number is no longer informative in any way. Furthermore, the IB Diploma offers a range of success, from a maximum of 45 points to a minimum of 24 points. Each of our students is unique and their challenges and support systems, as well as individual circumstances during exam time, can vary dramatically. No student should be made to feel that success comes only by receiving both full diplomas at top scores. For many students, hard work and top effort will bring with it a MEP diploma only and this success should be celebrated with the same heartfelt support as that given to our school’s high achieving students, of which there are many.

IB Students

With these three main points in mind, we share some important specific details to consider:

  • Futuro Verde students are developed in a holistic manner, with emphasis placed on their academic development, their commitment to service and their community, their emotional and physical strength and well-being and their ability to face an uncertain future with the thinking and communication skills that will ensure long-term success and adaptability. We focus on this holistic development, not on cramming for exams in order to maximize points received.
  • Futuro Verde accepts students into our diploma program with all levels of ability and disability. We are inclusive, not exclusive, because we know that the learning characterized by an IB education is beneficial to all and accessible by all!
  • All of our students, prek-12 receive an IB aligned education and all our students are encouraged to attempt the full IB diploma with MEP equivalency. Most schools only allow in a select few students into their IB program in an effort to pad their results as a school. Futuro Verde is committed to IB learning for all and a differentiated path to diploma success at the end of the journey with us.

So, if you are curious about our results as a school, we can share this with you: All graduating Futuro Verde 12th graders from our first graduation years ago and all the way to this year’s students in 2019 have achieved a diploma and the qualifications necessary to be accepted at the university of their choice. Because our class sizes at Futuro Verde are small and our emphasis on student well-being is paramount, we will not share the exact diploma each of our current graduating class has achieved. But, please know and remember:

  • we are exceedingly proud of each and every one of our students and their respective success stories! They are hard-working, driven, kind and passionate and we can’t wait to see what they will do and become in the years to come.
  • as a school, internally each year, we put substantial effort into looking at all of our exam results, both national and international, on a macro and micro level, in order to understand patterns, see trends, and consider where we can make structural, curricular, and instructional improvements moving forward.

So, this is why we will be shifting how we share student results now and in the future. We hope that in doing so we strike the correct balance between transparency and placing value on the right things- on student well-being, first and foremost, and on a respect for the complete and holistic development of our students and their preparedness for university and for life.

Staffing and Curricular Highlights, 2020 School Year

Staffing and Curricular Highlights, 2020 School Year

Learning Math

As a small school, in a continual process of growth and development, each new school year brings with it improvements and changes aimed at reaching our goal of ongoing innovation and adaptation designed to meet the needs of our ever changing student population and the challenges of an ever-changing global reality. The 2020 school year is no exception and I share with you here some staffing and curricular highlights for the coming school year.

Curricular Changes

The 2020 school year will be a year of school wide redesign for mathematics! All of our subject areas go through a regular  and programmed revision cycle and math has been an area of reflection, research and development this past 2019 school year. For the 2020 school year we are ready to fully roll out our modifications and adjustments. New approaches include:

Math
  • A new math end goal in 11th and 12th grade: As you will remember, Futuro Verde students can receive both the MEP and IB high school diplomas through minimum scores in IB Math examination. Starting in 2020, all IB Math courses will follow the newly adopted framework which has us shifting from teaching IB Mathematics to teaching the Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation course which will be offered at Standard Level and is targeted at students who are interested in developing their mathematics for describing our world and for modelling and solving practical problems using the power of technology. Mathematics: Applications and interpretation is developed for students who do best with math when seen in a practical context.
  • Redesign of curricular structure PreK-10th grade: In order to shift our mathematics instruction to better prepare students for this new math goal, we will be redesigning middle and beginning of high school math classes in order to integrate into more practical context, mathematical modelling and real world applications. In preschool and primary grades, math will be taught on both the English and Spanish side within a complementary format that will allow more minutes of math instruction weekly and the integration of more problem-solving opportunities.
  • School wide implementation of IXL: IXL has been adopted at Futuro Verde since October of the 2019 school year, but the 2020 school year will bring with it systematic implementation of IXL within and outside the math classroom. IXL is intended to support, not replace, mathematics instruction and teachers will be using IXL as a tool designed to intervene when students are in need of filling gaps in their math development and also to extend learning when students have successfully attained a new concept or objective.
History Instead of Business in IB

The 2020 school year will bring with it a change in our IB programming. The switch will come in what is referred to as the Group 3 subject area, Individuals and Societies. Due to a staffing change, our 12th graders will finish with Group 3 Business Management and our 11th graders will now take Group 3 History.

MEP Graduation Requirements Change from Bachillerato to FARO

This year brings with it a switch across Costa Rica away from MEP graduation exams known as Bachillerato and a switch to the new exam format called FARO. The exact details of this change are still being finalized and communicated to schools, but as an IB World School we do not anticipate the transition impacting our students in a significant manner.

Integration of Information Sciences in Middle School

In 7th through 9th grade this year, students will combine their technology and library times for a new course called Information Sciences. This course will focus on using the knowledge of the Information Sciences as a tool within other subject areas; for research, effective use of MLA, wide reading, and word processing and presentation tools.

Staffing Changes

1st Grade Bilingual Assistant

As Futuro Verde continues to grow to full capacity at all grade levels, we are adding a new position this year with a bilingual assistant who will be assigned to accompany our 1st graders. This extra set of hands and presence will ensure that groups run effectively and smoothly and will allow for small group and individual attention and instruction as needed.

New Position: School Psychologist

This year we are proud to announce that we will be fully funding a full-time school psychologist! Massiel Arroyo is a certified, bilingual psychologist excited to join the Futuro Verde community in support of school climate and well-being as well as the individual counseling and support that may be needed by students, families and staff members at Futuro Verde.

New Position: Costa Rican Social Studies and Civics Specialist, 1st-9th grades

In an effort to provide a more complex and meaningful structure in primary grades, while providing additional teacher prep and collaboration time, we will be adding a Costa Rican Social Studies and Civics specialist for the 2020 school year. This new specialist will be working with all classes from 1st through 9th grades in social studies and civics only. We are very excited for this new opportunity and the scheduling and hiring flexibility it brings!

Integration of Music and Physical Education in PreK-3rd grades

With a change in teacher in our specialist generalist position in PreK to 3rd grade, along with the division of the art position into two separate positions, we will be reducing the subject matter for the specialist generalist to teaching only PE and music. With our new specialist generalist, Juan, on staff in 2020 we have the unique opportunity with two professional PE teachers, to integrate music and PE with choreography, rhythmic dance and collaboration between both PE teachers for meaningful music integration into PE for the PreK-3rd grades.

School Supply List and Dress Code 2020

School Supply List and Dress Code 2020

Welcome to the 2020 school year! We hope it will be a rewarding school year for all!

Some important reminders for this new school year:

This year you will not receive a list of school supplies since the enrollment fee already includes the purchase of the school supplies for the year. So, you needn´t worry about going shopping because we already did it for you!

School Supplies

Parents pay a registration fee that includes the school’s purchasing of all school supplies that are shared items that a student will need throughout the year. Parents are in charge of purchasing for their child the following personal items:

  • backpack
  • reusable water bottle
  • laptop (suggested for 7-8 and required for 9-12)

Please note the revised school policy regarding your child’s school uniform:

FV students must come to school each day in their appropriate uniform. Do you know which uniform is required for preschool and primary students and which one is required for middle and high school students? Please read carefully no make sure you are fully understanding which uniform is the correct one for your child!

Dress code- The official Futuro Verde uniform is slightly different for daily wear and official events (you will receive a prior notification by the director when an occasion requires the official uniform):

Note: Students must wear a Futuro Verde uniform every day of the week. One of the prizes available to students at all grade levels as a part of our valores program is a “uniform free day”. If a student earns and uses a “uniform free day”, their clothes still need to meet the following requirements: skirts and shorts cannot be shorter than the student’s hand length above their knee, no transparent clothing, cleavage, or spaghetti straps, no inappropriate prints, etc.

Students who come to school without their full uniform will receive the following immediate consequences:

We remind parents that their child wearing the full and approved uniform is the responsibility of the parent only. Students who come without the appropriate uniform will need to purchase a full PE uniform set that they will then need to change into immediately and the uniform set will be automatically charged to the family as a part of the next month’s tuition. The child will NOT be allowed to call a parent to bring a change of clothes nor change into clothes that are appropriate that they have in their backpacks or within their personal items as this inhibits immediate attendance to classes and does not reflect a responsible and appropriate solution for a preventable uniform infraction.

Please help our students follow and comply responsibly with the school’s policies.

We wish you a happy start to the school year!
