In 2021, we began a new tradition at Futuro Verde in order to better embrace the global population of our students and families, and accept the challenge of using socially responsible stories to talk about our history, heritage and culture. Thanksgiving in the United States, celebrated on the third Thursday of November, was adapted into The Day of Gratitude, a Futuro Verde celebration of thanks and gratitude that can be embraced and celebrated globally.
This year, the Day of Gratitude committee talked about beginning new traditions that are not linked to the troubling legacy of the colonization of North America. At the same time, we recognize the value of different cultures coming together to share their stories and traditions and making new traditions. The Day of Gratitude was our effort to help our students recognize all of the wonderful things in their daily lives, and consider how we can show our gratitude for these things. As is custom in virtually every culture, we decided it would be best to share a meal together.
Doris in the school soda prepared a special meal for the students, and the lunch and recess periods were extended by half an hour each. Students were encouraged to create a centerpiece for their table, and the staff and students voted on the best centerpiece. The centerpieces showcased the students’ talents and gratitude as they shared a meal together. This year’s winner was Grade 6, with Grade 5 earning honorable mention.
As we move ahead, we’re excited to continue creating new traditions with our FV students and families that are inclusive of all of the cultures and heritages that are represented at FV.
